“Where do I begin?”

Our homes easily get filled up with too many things, before we realize the need of decluttering.

When we come to the realization that our homes need to be decluttered, the sheer volume of things is so overwhelming that it's hard to tell where to even begin.

So I kind of mapped out a few methods:

(1) Start with the least valuable things, like stationeries or utensils.

These small items are perfect for beginners. Most of the time we have little to no emotional attachments, because of the ease of replacements.

(2) Start with your own items.

Before thinking about the whole house, start with your personal items. It won’t hurt other household members if you’re working on your own things

(3) Start with the basement/garage (for those who have it).

These are the items that usually can’t fit inside the main areas of your home, therefore are sitting in the basement or garage, and also less frequently used.

(4) Start with kids' stuff.

I suggest not decluttering in front of them, but while they're away. This way there will be no confrontation. Clothes and toys can accumulate easily for kids, and they gets multiples and duplicates of items with the same purposes. So getting rid of the extra items should be a good start.

(5) Start with the old technologies.

Technology has advanced so much that devices/contents from a couple of decades ago can’t even be played nowadays, such as VHS, DVDs, cassettes, and those players.

The key is to start with the things you have the least emotional attachment with. Slowly, you'll build your own decluttering style, which leads to more confidence, and soon you'll pick up your own pace and become an expert!
